Travel should focus on building resilience

Today’s travel industry is starting to resemble an ageing movie star who has had ‘work’ done once too often – the cracks are showing.

Despite its challenges, the industry remains wedded to outdated IT that is part of the problem not the solution, particularly for smaller players.

In aviation, reservation systems rely on mainframes and Edifact messaging unchanged in fifty years, dominated by Sabre and Amadeus that hold 90 per cent of the global market[1].

Recent tech ‘fails’ highlight an industry that has failed to move with the times. These include a ‘technical fault’ that caused chaos at Heathrow after a BA system failed[2] in June. The tip of a very large iceberg.

Android, Microsoft and OS platforms are used endlessly to support legacy and highly centralised technology focused on global distribution systems that originated in the 1980s.

A monolithic system serving virtually an entire industry’s needs can be disastrous, as happened in July during the Crowdstrike/Microsoft outage. That the industry was hit was probably unavoidable. That it was hard so hit with some parts struggling to recover quickly was down to a lack of suitable IT options.

The travel industry needs to focus on building resilience and welcome new technology for better travel solutions.

Journey Mentor’s parallel systems rely not on one or two sources but up to a thousand. Which means if things go wrong alternatives exist for booking flights, hotels and other travel services.

Our products support the entire travel ecosystem: airlines, agents, cargo, business jet and luxury travel providers – and, through them customers.

Journey Mentor includes advanced revenue management for better competitive decision-making and eCommerce platforms that search better deals even after a customer has paid – while rewarding customer and agent.

We create meaningful loyalty systems that are truly rewarding, tailored to each customer. Cargo Mentor can ensure cargo arrives on time and at a profit while easing cross-border payments. Money Mentor used advanced technology for a swift, nimble and less costly solution to international payments.
